Coaching for lawyers

I recently got asked this by a curious lawyer I know. Great question! Well…

My coaching lawyers programme is designed to support lawyers to achieve success and high performance without having to sacrifice personal happiness, health, or their aspirations for their career to provide them with meaning and purpose.

My coaching model integrates principles from different approaches to change, and draws on my understanding as a psychotherapist, of the deeper psychological, emotional and spiritual phenomena which often manifest as "blocks" in a person's life. I complement this core understanding of change with different tools, techniques and practice perspectives derived from cutting-edge thinking in the coaching world. Some of the coaching philosophies I am influenced by, include vision-based coaching, Gestalt/relational coaching, emotional intelligence coaching, and intentional change coaching.

My coaching, at its core, is Integrative - such an approach is based on the notion that our sense of wellbeing, purpose, fulfillment and resilience are all inextricably linked to, and emergent from a complex web of personal experiences, interactions and relationships. Put another way - we are contextual beings, and our experiences, emotions and meaning-making cannot be fully comprehended or nourished by utilising an atomistic approach by looking at one part of ourselves in isolation.

Accordingly, I work with my clients to develop deeper awareness of the whole of their experience - by understanding their sensations, behaviours, emotions and vulnerabilities, they can being to understand and accept why they feel dissatisfied, burnt out, or lack meaning in their career. This is effectively the first (and most important!) phase.

The second phase is to begin to vision, set goals and dream into how you would like your personal and professional life to look, and for us to map out how to get there.

The third phase involves identifying the obstacles and challenges standing in your way.

The final phase is to develop the skills, strategies, self-confidence, creativity, enthusiasm, and to embody intelligence (that includes cognitive, emotional, relational and spiritual intelligence) to support you on the journey of realising your goals. These phases are distinct but do overlap throughout the coaching journey.

In order to give this entire process the space, presence and personal commitment (from me and you!) that it deserves, I typically work with legal professionals over distinct 3-month or 6-month periods.
